Power went out in the Cytec Industries Inc. Fortier Manufacturing Complex shortly after 11 a.m., which caused an ammonia leak. Residents began complaining of a strong odor as well as a burning sensation in their eyes.

Police officers blocked the north and south entrances of the parking lot, while Fire Department personnel and Emergency Management Director Dave Hall met with employees of the business. Employees told them that approximately 1000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia had leaked from a pipe on the roof.

The blow ruptured a 34,000-gallon ammonia refrigeration system, used to refrigerate meat before it is turned into Slim Jims, triggering the leak. Emergency workers reported ammonia levels at 20 parts per million outside the plant, an amount that emergency workers called safe.
The explosion hit the plant's southern end, an area known as the packaging side. The blast collapsed an exterior wall, smashing cars parked next to the 500,000-square-foot building, one of ConAgra's largest.
