Fabourg Marigny Flood Wall Mural Project

The goal of the project is to beautify the city by way of the flood walls. By painting the relief areas of the wall with murals commissioned to local, student and adult artists, they would provide a stunning improvement to the visual appeal of a very unattractive but necessary protective barrier. The murals would improve the look of the surrounding area and be a huge draw for residents and tourists to Crescent Park.

The initial project would be to create the murals showcasing the history and culture of New Orleans in Faubourg Marigny. It would start at Elysian Fields and then go towards the Marigny Street entrance of Crescent Park and continue all the way to NOCCA at Franklin Ave.

Overall themes would be researched and selected and then artists would submit drawings that would then be approved. There may also be an opportunity to put murals on other parts of the entrance that crossover or are adjacent to the wall such the elevator shaft to make the art 3 dimensional.

Concept

  • A large-scale, multi-panel collaborative mural called “Marigny Yesterday & Today Mural”
  • Local artists/muralists will guide and mentor community member participants.
  • Artists/muralists will be assigned panels or sections of the wall to create an original artwork that they find representative of specific themes and their interpretation of this concept.
  • Community participants and volunteer artists will be given instruction and tutorial to participate in this opportunity for neighborhood beautification.
  • We want mentor artists/participants to experience both collaboration and support, as well as honor their own creative independence.

Outcome

  • Create culturally and historically relevant artwork that can inspire young artist and help them grow independently
  • Create a positive environment for respectful collaboration amongst all age groups.
  • Create a legacy artwork that is both educational and inspiring.
  • Create a place to tell stories where visitors will have an enriching, educational understanding of the Marigny and New Orleans through the eyes of the Marigny.
  • Create a sense of pride and community for what we have collaboratively created.
